How the New NoteDex Android App Saved My Boox Air 3C From Collecting Dust

I’ll be honest: I almost stopped using my Boox Air 3C.

Like many of us who buy e-ink tablets, I had high hopes. I pictured myself writing long notes, planning projects, and getting work done distraction-free. However, after a while, I rarely picked it up. The built-in notes app—while good—felt stand-alone and isolated. My notes felt lost in the device, separate from the rest of my daily workflow. My Boox was slowly turning into an expensive reading tablet!

It's not that I didn't enjoy taking long-form notes. It feels nice, and I love the idea of capturing detailed thoughts. But capture was only half the picture. Once the notes were captured, they became part of a long continuous notebook, and all the notebooks were ON the device. Yes, there were ways to export, but the workflow felt clunky. My notes were not organized or easily available for recall. They felt lost in the depths of the device.

Now, as the creator of NoteDex, I had one goal for our new Android app: to make it more native and mobile performant than the web-based original. What I didn't realize was that once we created the new NoteDex Android app, everything changed—including my fondness for the Boox Air 3C!

From Frustration to Daily Habit

Before NoteDex’s update, my problem was friction:

  • Writing long notes was great but not well organized. Notes were pages in a long notebook, not standalone sets of pages.

  • There wasn’t a good way to quickly capture ideas in an organized manner.

  • Reviewing notes was tedious, and I often forgot what I’d written!

  • Notes were not easily visible on the Boox device.

  • Notes were not easily shareable or accessible on my phone or desktop.

But now, with NoteDex on my Boox, I’ve turned it into a daily habit machine. The joy of using the e-ink device has greatly increased. Let me explain.

What Changed With NoteDex on Boox

Here’s why I suddenly can’t put my Air 3C down:

1. Quick Notes That Stick

Instead of opening a blank document, I tap and instantly create a note card in NoteDex—typed, inked, or even recorded as audio. Capturing ideas is frictionless. It truly feels like I have an index card for my thoughts on a digital device.

2. Text + Ink Cards

I love mixing typed notes with handwritten sketches. On e-ink, inking feels natural, and the cards look really nice. It’s like having a physical stack of index cards, only smarter.

3. Flip-Through Review

This was the game-changer: flipping through cards on my Boox with the NoteDex 3D mode feels fast, fun, and visual. I can quickly scan what project cards are active, what I need to do next, or just review thoughts.

4. Always Visible Reminders

When my Boox is “off,” I can still see cards on the home screen. It’s like leaving sticky notes on my desk—except digital and organized. This type of view is not normally available on a Boox device. It’s the same view I get on my desktop NoteDex App.

5. Audio Recording

Sometimes I don’t feel like typing or writing. With NoteDex, I hit record, and my thought is captured. Later, I can play it back or let the AI summarize it. We also just introduced a live dictation mode, which is also helpful.

6. Attach Boox Notes to a NoteDex Card

This was another game changer. Now I have the best of both worlds. If I'm in a meeting and want to create a long note in the Boox notepad, I can do that. It can be a multi-page document with my handwriting on many pages. Then I just 'Share To' NoteDex, and that set of notes can be attached as a PNG (single page) or PDF (multiple pages) to a NoteDex card.

When I later open NoteDex on my Windows device, the NoteDex Card with the Boox Note PDF attached is right there, organized into the Stack for that Project. I can recall the information when I need it.

My New Workflow

Here’s how I now use Boox + NoteDex every day:

  • Morning → Flip through my top cards to remind myself of priorities.

  • During the day → Capture quick notes, sketches, or voice recordings. Capture long notes on the Boox built-in notepad and share them to NoteDex as an attachment.

  • Projects → Organize Cards into Stacks and Workspaces in NoteDex.

  • Review → Rapidly flip cards to spot next actions and plan tomorrow's tasks.

It’s simple, visual, and keeps me coming back.

Why This Matters for E-Ink Users

If you’ve ever thought: “I love my Boox hardware, but I can’t find the right app to really use it”—that was me. NoteDex finally bridges the gap.

The card format makes writing less intimidating and reviewing more natural. Combine that with stylus inking, audio capture, and quick-note mode, and suddenly your e-ink device isn’t just for reading—it’s a productivity powerhouse.

The NoteDex Card on the Boox device actually looks the same size as a real index card! Note that NoteDex will work on other Android-based e-ink devices, such as Viwoods AiPaper and others. The inking works 'well'—not quite as fast as the native Boox notepad but more than fine for quick notes.

Final Thoughts

I almost stopped using my Boox Air 3C. Now, thanks to NoteDex, I use it every single day. If you’ve been struggling to make your e-ink device part of your workflow, give NoteDex a try. It might just transform yours the way it transformed mine!
