Taking Study Notes: 5 Shapes That Actually Work


I failed chemistry because of my notes. Not the studying, not the tests — the notes. I wrote down every word the teacher said, every example on the board, every aside about the textbook. By the end of the unit I had forty pages of transcription and I couldn't tell you what a covalent bond was.
The notes were technically complete. They were also useless. There was no shape to them, no hierarchy, no way to find the important idea without re-reading the whole thing. I had captured everything and understood nothing.
Here's what I wish someone had told me at fifteen: there are five shapes your notes can take, and the shape you pick determines whether you're actually learning or just writing things down.
The Cornell method: cues on the left, notes on the right, summary at the bottom
Cornell splits the page into three regions. The biggest is the main notes area on the right — that's where you write during class, the way you'd write anywhere. The narrow column on the left is for cues: keywords, questions, prompts you write after class to test yourself. The bottom strip is a summary you write after class, in your own words, three or four sentences.
The trick is the cues column. Most people skip it. The cues are what force you to revisit the notes the same day, while the lecture is still fresh, and ask yourself: what would I need to see to remember this?
Cornell works when the lecture has a clear structure you can chunk. It falls apart when the material is image-heavy or when you're sketching diagrams. Use it for definitions, processes, anything that's mostly text.
The mapping method: a single topic at the center, branches outward
Mapping is a mind map without the software. You write the main topic in the middle of the page, then draw branches outward for each subtopic, and sub-branches for details. The shape of the page mirrors the shape of the idea.
The advantage over linear notes is that you can see relationships at a glance. Two ideas that connect are two branches that touch. Two ideas that don't connect are two branches in different corners of the page.
Mapping is good for visual learners and for material that's genuinely interconnected — biology, history, anything where the structure matters more than the sequence. It's bad for fast lectures because drawing takes longer than writing.
The outlining method: indentation shows hierarchy
Outlining is the method most people were taught in school and the one that actually works for dense material. You start with the main topic, indent subtopics underneath, indent details under those. The indentation IS the structure.
The reason outlining survives is that it scales. You can take notes on a fifty-minute lecture using outline form and end up with a page you can actually skim. Cornell gives you cues; outlining gives you a readable document.
Outlining fails when the lecture jumps around. If the teacher goes from chapter three to chapter seven to chapter two, your outline becomes a mess. In that case, switch to sentences.
The charting method: rows and columns for comparison
Charting is what you do when the lecture is mostly a list of similar things. Categories across the top, examples down the side, facts in the cells. Wars, presidents, chemical reactions, programming languages — anything where the same set of attributes applies to many items.
The advantage of charting is that it makes comparison trivial. You can scan down a column to see how the same attribute differs across items. With linear notes, that comparison requires re-reading the entire page.
Charting doesn't work for narrative material. If the lecture is a story or an argument, forcing it into a table loses the structure that matters.
The sentence method: one fact per line, no hierarchy
The sentence method is what you fall back on when nothing else fits. You write one fact per line, each line a complete sentence, no indentation, no structure beyond the order the teacher said things.
It looks like the worst kind of note-taking, but it's actually the most honest. Every line is a self-contained claim. You can quote one without dragging in the context. You can rearrange them later when you understand the structure you missed the first time.
Sentence notes are the raw material for everything else. Once you have them, you can convert them into an outline, a chart, or a mind map in a separate review session. That's often where the real learning happens.
Why none of them work on a phone
All five methods assume you have a page. A page you can split into regions, indent, draw branches on, divide into columns. A phone doesn't give you that — it gives you an infinite scroll and a delete key.
